The national senators' leader of the PRO, Alfredo De Angeli, announced that the political space will not support Judge Ariel Lijo's proposal to integrate the Supreme Court. De Angeli mentioned that the majority of the PRO bloc will vote against Lijo's appointment, expressing this position after a meeting led by former President Mauricio Macri at the party's national headquarters in Buenos Aires.
Regarding the appointment of García Mansilla, De Angeli pointed out that the report does not have the necessary signatures to be debated in the Senate and that there will be an intense debate about it. The senator committed to discussing this issue with the members of the bloc. Present at the meeting were prominent figures of the party, such as Macri, De Angeli, national deputies Cristian Ritondo and Diego Santilli, as well as some mayors.
President Javier Milei's decision to advance with the appointments of Lijo and García Mansilla by decree generated a series of criticisms from the opposition. The decree highlights the need to fill the vacancies in the Supreme Court, arguing that it currently has only three ministers, which hampers its functioning.
The resignations of Elena Highton de Nolasco in 2021 and Juan Carlos Maqueda in December 2024 opened the vacancies expected to be filled by Lijo and García Mansilla. The decree stipulates that the appointed judges must take an oath and assume their positions in the Supreme Court, pending the Senate's final decision on their appointments.
Mauricio Macri, although he attended the meeting, did not make any statements to the press. It was clarified that the validity of the appointments by decree will remain until the Senate issues a definitive decision regarding them.
